Concussion

One of the worst words a hockey mom can ever hear.  I have heard it twice now.  With the same kid.  3 weeks ago B took a hit and basically gave himself whiplash and a concussion.  Off to urgent care we went…then to the hospital.  Concussion.  Headaches.  Dizzy.  No appetite.  Scary times.

3 weeks later, B is back.  Played a great game today.  Relief on all of our faces.  B also suffers from Tourette Syndrome and the concussion brought on a new tic that he was a little worried about.  But he did great.  Threw some hits, took a few too.  Had a few shots on goal and all in all he looked like he never missed a day.

Parents – give your players some extra time to rest after an injury.  Don’t rush the return.  Yes, we love the game and do not want them to miss a minute.  But their health is more important than anything else.

Make sure you have the best possible helmet available.  I have seen a lot of parents spend $300-$400 on a pair of skates and then skimp on the helmet.  The helmet should always be top of the line.  The head deserves the best protection.

B’s new helmet is the Reebok 11k.  This helmet adjusts 360 degrees to fit every head perfectly.  Highly recommend.

Be safe.

Veterans Day – a day off?

Posted: November 11, 2013 in Kids

Today is Veteran’s Day.  I think of many people today.  My many uncles and cousins who have served in the military.  My friends who have served.  I think of my grandmother too.  How we miss her.  She always used to sell poppies for Veteran’s Day.  We would all have them hanging in our cars from our mirrors.  She would have hers hanging from her kitchen cupboard.

My three kids have the day off from school.  We will think of our family and friends today.  We have thanked our special friend Jesse Cornell this weekend.  We think the world of him and I am so thankful that he is such a strong influence on my children.

The 2 boys of course have hockey practice tonight.  B has pictures.  R’s team practice will be filmed for a commercial for a local TV station.  Very exciting.  But during the day today, we will reflect on why we have today “off” from school.  And we will bake…

Busy day!

2 weeks of school left. So much to do. Field trips, concerts, plays, fun days, half days, gifts…

I used to love summer vacation as a child. Now, not so much. I feel bad for my kids because of that. I think they get the feeling that I dread summer vacation. I don’t. I love it still. But, I work at home. That makes my days difficult. It was easier when they were smaller, but as they grow, they want to go, go, go!!

I saw an idea yesterday to tack up ideas on a cork board of items we want to do by the end of summer. I plan on doing this with my kids this year. We always say we are going to do certain things and visit certain places and we never get there. This year we will, even with these gas prices!
